Good song and video. I like this version, but I like the original too. The Chapin version has a more 70s feel.

@Paxta666 Good to hear that but I actually don’t believe that humanity can solve anything. We just are not able to tell what is really right and what is wrong. But I do believe in power to change through Jesus Christ. Only the Creator of this world knows how we should live our lives.

sadly our sons wanna be like us, but unfortunately we dont know who we wanna be.

@mikosoft You are telling the truth Mr., but the song is cool. Coolness is our new master. Sad but true. But your opinion raise my hope in humanity. Thx for your straightness :)

Man, what a sad and beautiful song!

I love this song, despite the melancholic story being told. Oddly I find it quite uplifting because it makes me grateful that I have a strong relationship with my dad and also makes me think that there may be people listening to it who are in the situation in the song but have a chance to change it.

Awesome!

This song reminds me of my son! His mother has parent alienation syndrome and has kept him from me four almost five years! Finally been getting visits now which is awesome but we just don’t have the bond a father and son should.. Still love the song I grew up on Harry Capin version though but great cover! LOVE YOU DEVIN!

@ahappypunk First I didn’t compare to any other society but the truth is there is much greater pressure to pursue career in modern society (modern = last 100 years) than was in any other. This pursuit of individual happiness is the main driving force behind broken families and there is no pressure from either society, state, family, friends or churh to live for one’s family rather than for himself as it was in the older times.

@mikosoft Bollocks. Why is it more true of modern society than any other? Also the original was written in 1974. Good tune though.

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin’ ‘fore I knew it, and as he grew
He’d say “I’m gonna be like you dad
You know I’m gonna be like you”

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home?
Son I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then
You know we’ll have a good time then

Really tough song…I never had a father, you see, I was adopted by my mother only, and just to think that in the future I’ll be a Father, is really something…I sure will adopt a child and give it the best father I can be.

@adamiam01 .. kinda in same situation .. but still love this song ..

adamiam01 May 10, 2010 at 9:58 pm

I wish I would have spent more time with my dad when I was growing up. And I wish I could have met my son, who never had the chance to be born. I love this song, however it brings up a lot of painful memories. Sometimes it’s necessary to remember things that are painful, so we do not repeat the same mistakes again.

Neonsmart May 10, 2010 at 10:17 pm

He sounds a bit like Bon Jovi in the 2nd verse :P

leariox9xxx May 10, 2010 at 10:56 pm
